Subliminal perception is continuous with conscious vision and can be predicted from prestimulus electroencephalographic activity

چکیده
Individuals are able to discriminate visual stimuli they report not consciously seeing. This phenomenon is known as “subliminal perception.” Such capacity often assumed be relatively automatic in nature and rely on stimulus-driven activity low-level cortical areas. Instead, here we asked what extent neural before stimulus presentation influences subliminal perception. We participants the location of a briefly presented low-contrast then rate how well saw stimulus. Consistent with previous studies, correctly discriminated slightly above chance-level accuracy reported Signal detection analyses indicated that while subjects categorized their percepts “unconscious,” these lay same continuum conscious vision. show discriminating could predicted high (AUC = 0.70) based lateralized electroencephalographic (EEG) stimulus, hemifield where was presented, trial's discrimination response. Altogether, our results suggest rather than being separate unconscious capacity, perception similar processes

Prestimulus oscillatory power and connectivity patterns predispose conscious somatosensory perception.
Which aspects of our sensory environment enter conscious awareness does not only depend on physical features of the stimulus, but also critically on the so-called current brain state. Results from magnetoencephalography/EEG studies using near-threshold stimuli have consistently pointed to reduced levels of α- (8-12 Hz) power in relevant sensory areas to predict whether a stimulus will be consci...

D the last decade, the classical view of a protein existing in equilibrium between discrete conformational states has undergone a radical transformation. Experimental observations, particularly those obtained from NMRdetected hydrogenydeuterium exchange, indicate that even under native conditions proteins need to be considered as complex statistical ensembles (see for example refs. 1–13). In th...

A famous instance is a picture of a receipt taken by a customer at a hunting and fishing chain store called Cabela. The receipt listed a 2.3%“medical excise tax,” which was supposedly levied as part of the Affordable Care Act. This was seen as evidence that there is a hidden tax that consumers are paying for the ACA. The store later cleared this up as being a “software glitch” on their part. Th...
متن کاملVisual search performance is predicted by both prestimulus and poststimulus electrical brain activity
An individual's performance on cognitive and perceptual tasks varies considerably across time and circumstances. We investigated neural mechanisms underlying such performance variability using regression-based analyses to examine trial-by-trial relationships between response times (RTs) and different facets of electrical brain activity. Thirteen participants trained five days on a color-popout ...
متن کاملHow can speech production skills be predicted from visual, auditory, and haptic perception skills?
How does speech production relate to speech perception? To investigate the most suitable perceptual factors to predict the production skills of a speaker, we determined the visual acuity for speech movements, the auditory acuity for speech sounds, and the haptic acuity of speech organs, following equivalent protocols in all three modalities. These abilities were linked to the individual’s disti...
